Jack “Machine Gun” McGurn (1905 February 15, 1936) was a key member of Al Capone’s Chicago based criminal organization known as the Chicago Outfit, and believed to be the principal assassin and planner of the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.

Jack was born Vincenzo Antonio Gibaldi in Licata, Sicily, the eldest son of Angelo and Guiseppa Gibaldi (ne Verderame). A year later his family emigrated to the USA, arriving at Ellis Island on November 24, 1906. Vincenzo grew up in the Chicago slums where he later took up a career in boxing as a teenager and changed his name to “Battling” Jack McGurn because Irish boxers got the better bookings.

As a youth, McGurn did not run in gangster circles, however when his father was assassinated by members of The White Hand Gang after being mistaken for Willie “Two Knife” Altieri, McGurn, with Frankie Yale’s consent, killed the three “hitmen” responsible and avenged his father’s death. On hearing the news, Al Capone asked Yale if he could bring McGurn to Chicago and Yale agreed.

He was the assassin that fired the Tommy gun that killed Frankie Yale in 1928.

McGurn also owned a speakeasy, the infamous Green Mill, at 4802 North Broadway ironically, in the middle of the rival “Bugs” Moran gang’s territory. In the mid 1920s, McGurn gained a 25 percent ownership of the jazz club. Manager Danny Cohen gave McGurn the stake to “persuade” comedian/singer Joe E. Lewis from moving his act south to the New Rendezvous Caf, at Clark Street and Diversey Avenue. McGurn managed to convince Lewis by slitting his throat, cutting off a portion of his tongue and leaving him for dead. Miraculously, Lewis recovered, but because of the injuries to his mouth, his songs never regained their lush sound. The incident was later immortalized in the movie The Joker Is Wild (1957), with Frank Sinatra as Joe E. Lewis and a Hollywood soundstage as The Green Mill. While the club was located in the heart of Moran territory, it served Capone’s booze and beer and Alphonse Capone himself was a frequent patron.

McGurn is best known for the infamous instance of violence on St. Valentine’s Day, in 1929, where he planned the attempted killing of the North Side gang leader George “Bugs” Moran. The incident became known as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. McGurn remained free from suspicion, largely due to his “blonde alibi” the nickname of girlfriend Louise Rolfe who claimed they spent the whole day together.

In April 1930, when Frank J. Loesch, chairman of the Chicago Crime Commission compiled his “Public Enemies” list of the top 28 people he saw as corrupting Chicago, McGurn’s name was fourth on the list, which was published nationwide.

This notoriety caused him to be shunned by the Mob, because he now was among the first to be arrested for any crime worse than spitting on the sidewalk. So McGurn, who had great eye hand coordination, attempted a career as a professional golfer. According to the July, 1996 and June, 2003 issues of Chicagoland Golf magazine, McGurn was a silent partner in Evergreen Golf Club, at 91st Street and Western Avenue, in Chicago. It was a known mob hangout where McGurn usually could be found playing, practicing,

giving lessons or playing cards in the clubhouse.

On August 25, 1933, the Western Open golf championship began at Olympia Fields Country Club in the far south suburb of Olympia Fields, Illinois. A reasonably skilled golfer and flashy dresser, McGurn entered the competition under his birth name Vincent Gebhardi (the correct spelling, although he used “Vincent Gebardi”, “Vincent Gibaldi” and “Vincenzo Demory” at times) and carded a mediocre 13 over par 83 on course No. 4 (today’s North Course). The next morning, seeing the name “Gebhardi” on the day’s pairing sheet didn’t fool an alert Chicago police detective, who put his own group together and headed out to the course. McGurn was accosted on the seventh green and told he was under arrest. With his usual smugness, McGurn politely asked to finish his round, as he felt he was playing much better golf than the day before. Amused, the plainclothesmen agreed and became part of his gallery. But the police presence began to unnerve McGurn and his game suddenly went sour. He came in with 16 over par 86 for a 36 hole total of 169, 14 strokes above making the cut. As McGurn strolled off the 18th and final green to join his girlfriend, a burly detective snapped on the handcuffs and McGurn was carted off to jail.

Less than three years later, McGurn, by then impoverished and abandoned by his fellow gangsters, was assassinated on February 14, 1936, at the second floor, Avenue Recreation Bowling Alley, at 805 N. Milwaukee Avenue (at Chicago Avenue). McGurn, wearing rented shoes, was shot and killed by two men with machine guns. They left a note near his body that read:

“You’ve lost your job, You’ve lost your dough, Your jewels and handsome houses, But things could be worse, you know, You haven’t lost your trousers.”

It is not known for certain who McGurn’s killers were, but research and speculation by criminologists suggest two equally likely theories: That George “Bugs” Moran, the very man Jack had tried to kill years before, gunned him down in revenge of the murder of his gang exactly seven years later, to the day, or that the South Side mob under Nitti murdered him, as McGurn (a heavy drinker and a braggart) had become a source of constant bad press and embarrassment to the mob, which, under Nitti, was striving for a much lower public profile than it had under Al Capone.

McGurn was one of many organized crime figures to be featured on the documentary series American Justice. One theory is that McGurn was killed by The Outfit for failure of the murder of Joe E. Lewis. When Lewis no longer wished to play at the “Al Capone” Club, McGurn threatened to have Lewis “whacked”. Lewis, however did not take this threat seriously. One night three men came to Lewis’s apartment in attempts to kill him. They slashed his throat, cut deep gouges next to his ear and sliced off part of his tongue. The three men left him for dead. Fortunately Lewis was able to get help and survived. But bad news for McGurn who was “whacked” by the outfit.

timberland outlets Chicago cop 2012 fatal shooting of teen and IPRA

IPRA sustained complaints filed that the officer, who is not named in the ruling, used unreasonable force when he shot the teen, who was fleeing from police and was 50 feet away when he was struck. The officer had said he thought the teen was armed and turned toward him, but police didn’t find a weapon on the teen. The status of the officer involved is unclear. An IPRA spokeswoman would not release the name of the officer Thursday evening, citing a provision in the rank and file police contract that prohibits the city from releasing names of officers accused of wrongdoing.IPRA’s sustained allegations against the officer will be sent to Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, who will decide whether he agrees with the agency’s findings. If he does, then he will bring departmental charges against the officer, recommend a penalty and forward the case to the nine member, mayoral appointed Chicago Police Board, which will decide whether the officer should be fired, suspended or acquitted of all allegations. It’s the latest shooting that IPRA has determined to be in violation of use of force policies since Mayor Rahm Emanuel was forced by a judge in 2015 to release video of an officer shooting teenager Laquan McDonald 16 times. Between its inception in 2007 and December 2015, the agency investigated hundreds of shootings and found only two to be unjustified. Since then, however, five more shootings, including Dakota’s, were found to be unjustified use of force.IPRA has also come under fire in recent years from lawyers and civil rights advocates for its lengthy disciplinary investigations and for nearly always clearing officers of wrongdoing.According to IPRA’s investigative report released Thursday evening, the officer who shot Dakota told detectives that he and his partner were driving in an unmarked vehicle after responding to a burglary in progress before the officer saw the teen walk through an alley on foot. When Dakota “rounded the corner” into the alley and headed east, the officer said he saw a black revolver in his right hand that the teen was trying to place in his waistband, according to the report. Dakota then fled, and the officer lost sight of him on two occasions while pursuing him, the report said. The officer chased Dakota on foot and yelled “stop, police, drop the gun,” according to the report. Dakota continued to flee, climbing over fences and into at least one backyard.Dakota looked back at the officer and reached to his waist before the officer opened fire on the teen, the officer told detectives. But IPRA challenged the credibility of the officer’s account, noting inconsistencies in his statements, including whether the teen had actually turned toward the officer, or if the officer thought he was going to turn.Though a gun was recovered nearby, IPRA’s investigation also questioned whether Dakota was in possession of the weapon at the time he was shot, according to the report.”Given that (Dakota) in fact, had no firearm in his pants, it is unlikely that he would have made a gesture indicating that he did, particularly in light of the fact that he was approximately 50 feet away from the officer and was likely gaining ground on him,” IPRA wrote. In June 2016, the Chicago City Council agreed to pay Dakota’s mother $925,000 as part of her civil lawsuit settlement with the city.At the time of his death, Dakota’s family said, he was a freshman at Paul Robeson High School in the South Side’s Englewood neighborhood. His family said he loved to dance to hip hop music, tell jokes and play video games. His family also said he wrestled and played basketball for fun, and he also collected shoes and hats.At the board’s monthly public meeting, Dakota’s mother, Panzy Edwards, acknowledged to its members Thursday night that police officers are only human, but asked that justice be done.”I know they got to be defended,” she said of the police, “but what about our kids that’s being taken? They deserve some defense too.””So as you all look at my son’s case . look at it like right is right and wrong is wrong,” she later said. “My son was 15 years old, shot one time in the back of his head. He didn’t deserve to die and he (deserves) justice. We all deserve justice. But it’s tearing me up. I’ve been sick since this happened because the way this world is, people don’t get justice.”

Dealer Tommy Brasher is preparing to rip the metal exterior off his Weimar, Texas, Chevrolet store. And he’s excited about it.

Sure, it’ll cost him more than $100,000 to install the bright blue aluminum paneled archway and silver fascia required to comply with Chevrolet’s dealer image program. And the fa he has up now is still in good shape.

But Brasher says he has “no problem with what they’ve asked me to do with the outside of the building. I think it’ll look great, and I’ll be proud of it.”

His enthusiasm fades, though, when the discussion turns to his interior renovations.

A review of Chevy’s facility design guidelines, obtained by Automotive News, offers a window into the numerous vendor specific requirements and control over the renovation process being exerted by General Motors as described by Brasher and other dealers who are overhauling their stores.

Dealers with experience across the brand spectrum say Chevrolet reflecting the position of GM as a whole has one of the most prescriptive and stringent programs in the industry, except for a few of the luxury brands. And some of the meticulously detailed requirements have dealers shaking their heads.

“They’re micromanaging this process to a ridiculous degree,” says Brasher, a former co chairman of the Chevrolet National Dealer Council.

In his parts department waiting area, Brasher just spent $7,000 to have a subcontractor lay light gray tile over darker colored tile that Brasher had installed just one year ago. He recently yanked dozens of pieces of dark gray Herman Miller furniture to make way for blond pieces from the same manufacturer.

He’s spending $4,500 on a greeter station that Chevrolet wants him to build even though nobody will sit in it since his salespeople intercept every customer who walks in the door. Brasher jokes that he should build the greeter station on wheels so he can cart it out of the showroom once GM approves his store makeover.

Alan Batey: The makeover was “well overdue.”

Chevrolet’s image program has become the poster child for the controversy over automakers’ facility requirements. That is partly because of the sheer magnitude of the effort: GM believes it has undertaken what is probably the biggest transformation of a dealer network in the industry’s history.

By 2016, Chevrolet expects at least 2,500 of its 3,000 dealers to complete the voluntary facility overhaul, pouring roughly $3 billion into their stores.

The breadth of the overhaul underscores just how badly the Chevy dealer network needs it, says Alan Batey, Chevy’s vice president of sales and service. GM estimates that 60 percent of its dealerships were built before the mid 1970s.

When GM launched the image program in 2009, Batey says, only about 5 percent of Chevy dealerships met the brand’s standards one of the industry’s lowest marks. He says that put Chevrolet at a competitive disadvantage against brands such as Toyota and Honda.

“We were well overdue for this massive network makeover,” Batey says. “We needed to transform the look and feel of our franchise. It was definitely one of the key strategies we needed to implement to be successful.”

Many dealers agree and are forging ahead despite the expense and months long headache of tearing apart a store.

The program is prodding others to build new stores or relocate to take advantage of the incentive money GM pays dealerships that comply with the facilities image program. The cash can total $50,000 to $100,000 a year for small dealerships and as much as $1.5 million for the largest stores.

GM, which has similar facility programs in place for Cadillac and Buick GMC dealerships, is quick to point out that dealers aren’t required to comply. Dealers counter that if they forego an overhaul they’ll be susceptible to being undercut on price by dealers who are getting the bonus cash.

Special tile, lights

The Chevy guidelines dictate everything from the distance between sales desks and the customer entrance at least 20 feet to the wall covering for the parts department. The light gray tile should be a minimum of 12 by 12 inches, preferably 16 by 16. A striped pattern perpendicular to the showroom facade is preferred.

A special type of halogen lighting is required to “present the Chevrolet vehicles to customers in the best possible light,” the guidelines say. Sales offices must have glass fronts and glass doors. Specific shades of blue, silver or orange accent paint are required for the rear walls of any offices that face the showroom.

Chevrolet requires at least five framed images in the showroom the guidebook shows aluminum framed shots of the Chevy Volt to be installed in pairs or groups. Walls 12 feet or longer should have three frames. Walls from 5 feet to 12 feet long should have two.

Dealers can purchase those pieces from only one vendor: DCI Marketing of Milwaukee. DCI also is the exclusive provider of display stands for wheels and other accessories, another requirement of the program.

Awards for example, a plaque honoring a dealership for community work should not be in the showroom, according to the rules.

Pattison Sign Group of Knoxville, Tenn., will sell all the signs required under the program, including the “Chevrolet” name across the blue archway and the stand alone, neon blue sign with the dealer’s name.

Mike Blaettner, general manager at Ray Skillman Chevrolet in Indianapolis, says GM has “complete control” over the design of a new $4 million showroom and service drive that the dealership is starting.

“Depending on what your property is like or whether you’re in California or Indiana, there ought to be more choice on the materials and vendors you can use,” Blaettner says. “But we’re not complaining. We’re following the drill.”.

David Bates, general manager at Peltier Chevrolet, said the value of the wheels and tires is going to be about $200,000 to $250,000, but noted that the dealership is still trying to calculate that number.

timberland portsmouth Chevrolet’s Teen Driver safety feature to debut on redesigned Malibu

buy timberland shoes Chevrolet’s Teen Driver safety feature to debut on redesigned Malibu

Chevrolet says Teen Driver is the first feature in the industry to offer what is essentially a report card that allows parents to view on a display how their teens drive.

Once active, Teen Driver automatically mutes the radio until the front seat belts are fastened. Parents can set the radio maximum volume to a lower level.

Additionally, parents can select a maximum speed between 40 and 75 mph, which activates a visual warning and audible chime if exceeded.

Malibu midsize segment is synonymous with what is commonly known as family sedan segment, which makes this feature very appropriate for Malibu, a Chevrolet spokesman said.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. is nearly three times the rate for drivers ages 20 and older.

developed this system so parents could use it as a teaching tool with their kids they can discuss and reinforce safe driving habits, said MaryAnn Beebe, a General Motors safety engineer.

A Malibu with Teen Driver can also track:Maximum speed traveled.

Antilock brake events.

Parents can enable the feature by creating a personal identification number in the settings menu of their available MyLink system.

The PIN allows parents or adults to register a teen key fob, which is critical because the system settings are turned on only for registered key fobs.

Ford Motor Co. introduced a similar feature, MyKey, on the 2010 Ford Focus. A do not disturb feature blocks phone calls and holds text messages on phones paired with Sync.

MyKey also allows for top speed settings of 65, 70, 75 or 80 mph, with chimes sounding at 45, 55 and 65 mph.

The 2016 Malibu has optional safety features that, if equipped, are automatically turned on and incapable of being manually turned off when the system is activated. They include stability control, front and rear park assist, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert, daytime running lights and automatic light control, forward collision braking, traction control and front pedestrian braking.

Teen Driver will be standard on the Malibu Premier and optional on Malibu LT models when equipped with the Convenience Package and up level radio.

The system is not a subscription based service and will remain with the vehicle permanently.

Chevrolet said there are plans to offer Teen Driver on other models.

The 2016 Malibu debuts next week at the New York auto show and is expected to go on sale at the end of 2015.

timberland sprint boots Chevrolet Canada remembers Gord Downie with a subtle tweet

Chevrolet Canada paid tribute to iconic rock star, poet and Canadian troubadour Gord Downie, after the lead singer of The Tragically Hip died Oct. 17.

The automaker posted on its official Twitter account a black and white image of what appeared to be a highway lined with majestic pines and the words: “Over 53 years, a kid from Kingston spent his life on the road, inspiring Canadians with his music from coast to coast. Today we say goodbye to an icon. Today we say goodbye to an icon.

Chevy Canada spokesman Mathew Palmer said the tweet was a genuine expression of shared grief.

The tweet did not mention Downie by name or show a car, and Palmer said that was intentional.

“We’re an iconic company of fans ourselves and this was something that was important to us and we felt like we should say something to acknowledge it,” said Palmer, director of communications for parent company General Motors Canada.

“Legitimately, ours was a true sense of mourning and the loss of an icon.”

Downie, who was diagnosed with incurable brain cancer, died Tuesday at 53. newspapers when legendary musician Prince died in April 2016.

At that time, Chevrolet tweeted out a picture of a red, 1963 Corvette, a nod to his hit 1982 song Red Corvette. But some companies might believe it helps humanize their brand.

One tweet from Hudson’s Bay spurred debate for its seeming lack of tact, and was reportedly removed within 30 minutes.

But that was long enough to be captured by the Toronto based lunchtime tabloid Twelve Thirty Six, which reposted the image that seemed to some like a thinly veiled attempt to hawk denim jackets.

“Here’s to the King of the Canadian Tuxedo. RIPGordDownie,” the department store tweeted, along with an image of three denim jackets with brand labels prominently displayed, including one with a lining that featured HBC’s distinctive multi coloured stripes.

Veresiu found that tweet in “poor taste.”

SOCIAL MEDIA FAILS

Several companies have pulled similar stunts in the wake of other high profile deaths.

Shortly after Prince died a quickly deleted tweet from General Mills owned Cheerios included the words “Rest in peace” on a purple background, with a Cheerio dotting the letter “i”.

Then there was the computer company Lenovo, which tried to link its corporate values to those of Prince with the tweet: “He embodied so much of what we prize most: fearlessness, love and a refusal to stand still. RIP, Prince.”

Similar social media gimmicks emerged in the wake of David Bowie’s death last year.

London shoe retailer Office Shoes tweeted “RIP David Bowie farewell to a legend” and quoted lyrics from his hit “Let’s Dance” “put on your red shoes and dance the blues.”

Meanwhile, the Bordeaux vineyard Valade Transandine tried to lure Bowie fans with this tweet: “Celebrate the life and times of David Bowie with one of our lovely wines. May he rest in peace.”

Veresiu said companies tend to be myopic when it comes to social media, believing that only a specific demographic will view it and that if a message fails, it can easily be deleted.

“More often than not these companies don’t test, don’t do the proper market research for their social media campaigns prior to launch, and so they just release statements and tweets and photos on various social media platforms and hope for the best.”

timberland portsmouth Cheryl Cole returns to X Factor

timberland holly boots Cheryl Cole returns to X Factor

The short answer for me is yes.

The most exciting moment every week on X Factor is always when the judges appear on the stairs and you get a first look at what they are wearing (well, what the girls are wearing. And now Gary gone, we hardly going to be waiting with baited breath to find out how high Cowell waistline is we already know, unfeasibly high).

In recent years, that opening moment has been fairly predictable, although, admittedly, far from pedestrian. Nicole Scherzinger always went long and tight, with glamorous gowns from high octane designers such as Julien Macdonald and Michael Costello (as well as a dash of Missguided), while Sharon generally also went full length and saturated in sequins.

Full length and dripping in sequins was the look last series (Picture: Rex Features)

For all the bling and cut out panels, it lacked the thrill of the Cheryl vs. Dannii years. The hair wars alone were dramatic what colour of L would Cheryl debut each week? What type of danish pastry would Dannii have fashioned her bob into this week (and where did all the extra hair come from)?

There were also a lot more cocktail frocks from Chezza and Dannii (incidentally, wouldn they make a great girl band?). The lesser prime time Minogue may not be back (yet), but here are our favourite looks from the Geordie dimple previous stint on the panel to remind us just what we been missing. And,

yes, we have missed her.

This Krystof Strozyna dress is simple yet chic it also lets you admire those great bow shoes.

A quirky Philip Lim playsuit (Picture: PA)

Cheryl wore this brightly patterned 3.1 Philip Lim jumpsuit at the Manchester auditions in 2009 and later auctioned it for charity. We tried to get it in the unique bid wins auction but failed and, let face it, we don quite have her doll like proportions, so we only be able to look at it longingly anyway.

3. The orange Matthew Williamson dress, 2008

Remember these halcyon days? (Picture: YouTube)

Cheryl definitely won the war of outfit attrition that week in her Matthew Williamson mini dress, which was given an extra pop of colour with those pink pumps. This is why we like cocktail dresses we get a better view of the shoes.

There nothing wrong with a little 80s volume (Picture: YouTube)

There something a little Molly Ringwald about this Stephane Rolland one shouldered dress. You may see more of this designer when Cole returns for the new series she a big fan and he was also responsible for her the white dress she wore to Cannes in 2012, which looked as though it had been dipped in red paint and feathers.
