Industrialist Henry Kaiser built the estate, a summer retreat, in 1938 in 30 days, employing a crew of 300 around the clock. In the 1980s, Fleur du Lac ( of the lake became Fleur du Lac Estates with the remodeling of some original structures and the construction of 22 lakefront homes ranging up to 6,000 square feet.

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. The same management company that used to oversee the Essex Village apartment complex in Henrico County that county leaders called a place anybody should live, is now under fire in the City of Poughkeepsie in New York, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal newspaper.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reported Jan. 9 that residents of the Rip Van Winkle House apartments have been coping with ongoing heating problems since at least October, and that the complex is managed by PK Management.

PK Management is the same company that managed Essex Village when Henrico County opened 140 code violations at the complex and it received an grade from HUD before it was sold in November.

According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development,

PK Management received more than $150 million to subsidize the rent of residents at low income housing complexes across the country in 2016.

An article in the Poughkeepsie Journal says the city Building Department issued a violation to PK Management after finding an apartment had no heat, and temperatures in other rooms were insufficient.

According to another article in the Poughkeeepsie Journal, after the violation was issued, the Mayor of Poughkeepsie announced all the units had adequate heat by Jan. 12.

The day before, the Journal Editorial Board wrote a piece urging the city to stay on PK Management to fix the problem.

Sault Ste. Marie premier entertainment facility is losing more money every year.

The anticipated loss for the facility is estimated to be about $626,890.41 for 2018, about $40,000 more than the previous year, and even more than 2016, city council was told Monday.

Council passed a resolution asking city staff to compare the Sault facility with that in other similar sized municipalities that have privately operated facilities.

Council also wants a process and timeline outlined to consider the option of private management of the Essar Centre.

The motion, moved by Ward 2 councillors Susan Myers and Sandra Hollingsworth, notes that Kingston, Ont. city council has entered into a contractual agreement with a private management company to run its Rogers K Rock Centre, and the city is guaranteed 100 per cent of the first $550,000 in profits.

Myers said the use of the Essar Centre has not been maximized and something must be done to reduce the flow of loss.

She also suggested staffing options be examined to determine whether the facility is being marketed enough.

Myers said that in 2014 council received a report in caucus penned by Price Waterhouse outlining options for privatization.

While she said the report didn go far enough into depth with numbers, it offers a good start for staff to update, she argued.

Tom Vair, deputy CEO of community development and enterprise services, said staffing number changes have been made recently and staff is looking at ways to attract more events.

is a hemorrhaging which must be addressed,

Myers said. options should be on the table.

But Ward 1 Coun. Paul Christian warned that it will be difficult to turn the facility books to black.

a small market and a lot of arenas don make money, he said. not overly optimistic that we going to turn things around. We got a limited market, an aging population and a lot of people on fixed incomes.

Christian said that the contract established with the facility main tenant, the Soo Greyhounds, should also be re examined.

His wardmate, Steve Butland, warned council to tread cautiously.

operators want to make a profit, he said.

Consideration must also be given to groups and organizations that use the facility regularly, with the ice time already booked up. Privatization could result in increased user fees for them.

Ward 6 Coun. Joe Krmpotich also raised concerns that a private operator could result in the loss of local jobs.

Ward 3 Coun. Matthew Shoemaker argued the resolution didn go far enough. He wanted to see all the city arenas and community centre considered in the resolution.

Shoemaker called the resolution electioneering by raising the matter nine months prior to an election and asking for the report by August when Myers rejected his motion a year ago asking staff to report on the pros and cons of leasing the McMeeken Centre to a private operator. That resolution failed in a 4 4 recorded vote and, at the time, Myers said she was philosophically opposed to a private operator making money off a taxpayer facility. She had also noted that convention centres can also be a money losing operation for municipalities, but they draw people with events and bookings, resulting in cash registers ringing in other ways.

Shoemaker and wardmate Judy Hupponen moved to amend Myers motion and incorporate all the community centres in the report, then report back to council after the fall election. It failed.

Mayor Christian Provenzano said while he supports the concept of Myers resolution, he said he doesn believe the timing is right because it will ultimately be the next council that could make the decision.

timberland jobs Eskimos QB Mike Reilly says all signs point to career season for him with the team

roll top timberland boots Eskimos QB Mike Reilly says all signs point to career season for him with the team

EDMONTONWhen we last left Mike Reilly, he heroically tried to win the CFL Western final playing on a broken foot that was even far more damaged than he believed.

Thursday Reilly took a drive out to the Edmonton Eskimos training camp complex in Spruce Grove with receivers Adarius Bowman, Nate Coehoorn and Cory Watson to have a look around the facility, hotel, etc. and give everything one last test drive on the field running a few routes before camp.

But that where he pulled back the reigns and when loose talk about winning the Grey Cup should be done quietly and in small groups, he said, until prove they can win a game against the Grey Cup champion Calgary Stampeders.

Reilly is the most important football player on the team and without question the spokesman for the group.

With the team headed to medicals Saturday and the start of two a days at training camp Sunday, he definitely the go to guy for the 67th season of Eskimos football.

It took most of the off season to get to this point, but now that he there, Reilly says it great, because he going to a training camp with the same coach, the same offence, the same playbook and all the arrows pointed up.

a breath of fresh air not to be starting over from scratch. That a big benefit compared to what we had to deal with the last couple of years. again, there are all these new rules.

Mikey likes the one where defensive backs are not allowed to have contact with receivers after the pass catcher is five yards down field.

think it a great rule change. In the past, if you were dropping back and going through your progression and your wide receiver was in a position where he was going to be able to pull away but you knew the defender was grabbing a little bit of cloth, it was a dangerous decision to make a throw. Now contact down the field is apparently an automatic penalty. So you can throw that pass. figures the rule favours him.

think it remains to be seen how it going to affect different quarterbacks and their style of play. I sure hope it does.

thing, when I get out of the pocket and extend the play, all those receivers are already further downfield than five yards. And it sure helps that I have a big, strong, fast guy like Adarius Bowman. He difficult to cover as it is, he said of last season league leading receiver with 112 receptions and 1,456 yards, 26 catches and almost a full 400 yards more than the runners up.

you can contact him after five yards,
timberland jobs Eskimos QB Mike Reilly says all signs point to career season for him with the team
he should present a much bigger problem. there coach Chris Jones, who lives for situations like this.

guarantee that he analyzed every new rule and thought about every single way it can be of an advantage to our team. If I know coach Jones like I do and everybody else knows Chris Jones, he spent the off season figuring out how to make these new rules work for us. your correspondent suggested to Reilly that he hasn had his career year yet, he laughed.

certainly hope not, he said.

It wasn meant as criticism but to suggest with an allegedly much improved receiving core, the new rules, the stability around him and his renewed health and the date on his birth certificate, the timing is about right to have his career year.

Two years ago, in his first year in Edmonton, Reilly completed 305 of 512 passes for 4,207 and 59.6%. He ended the season with an 86.9 quarterback efficiency rating. Last year his completions, attempts and yardage went down (288 of 446 for 3,327) due to injury but his percentage (64.6%) went up, as did his efficiency rating.

He hasn put up Ricky Ray numbers but his leadership and winning percentage last year were such that he made people stop talking about Ricky Ray.

do believe this year I should play the best football I played as a pro. I certainly expect this year to be the best year that I had.

one big stat, the one I want to be graded on, the one I care about, is the wins. Certainly last year, we improved tremendously. But there still a ton of room for improvement for everybody on our team but especially for myself.

biggest thing is to come in and realize what your shortcomings are and try to get better at those, and improve and continue to be good at the things you do well. With me having another year grasping this offence and another year where this coaching staff is able to evaluate how to make this offence work the best that it can work with me playing quarterback for it, I think we going to continue to get better and this year should be an improvement over last year, added Reilly.

I look at the team and see the consistency with our coaching staff, we have that core group of guys that were here last year that have learned how to win to a certain extent but also learned that we have to get over the hump.

have to be able to beat Calgary, yes. Attention all new Eskimos,
timberland jobs Eskimos QB Mike Reilly says all signs point to career season for him with the team
Edmonton lost all four games to Calgary last year and now have a 12 game losing streak going against the Stampeders.

think it a good time for us because we had some success so we know what that like but we also haven had enough where we were content.

extremely hungry. We know that we have a team that capable of winning the Grey Cup but we also know that there a lot of work to be done to get to that point.

timberland shoe laces Ernie Richardson cheering for Steven Laycock and Saskatchewan at the Brier

timberland discounts Ernie Richardson cheering for Steven Laycock and Saskatchewan at the Brier

“I just want to watch Saskatchewan win another Brier before I die.” Ernie Richardson.

REGINA Ernie Richardson is 86 years old.

Harvey Mazinke and Rick Folk have been the only skips from the heartland of curling to win it since then. Mazinke won it in Edmonton in 1973 and Folk in Calgary in 1980.

Ernie, Arnold, Sammy and Wes Richardson won it four times in a span of five years and nobody from Riderville has won it in the last 37 years. And this year team, skipped by Steven Laycock came out of the gate at 0 2.

At the wonderful opening ceremonies, there were 76 curlers all of them wearing the green and white sweaters out there.

all won the provincial championship and played in the Brier. It was nice to see them all together like that. They never be all together like that again, Ernie Richardson marvelled at the mass of them packing the bowels of the building before being introduced.

collection of losers ever assembled, your correspondent joked.

That when he said it.

just want to watch Saskatchewan win another Brier before I die. when the Richardsons were on top of the curling world, the belief was that Saskatchewan would win a multitude of Briers.

Saskatchewan, we used to have to most curlers of any province in Canada. Back in the old days there was nothing else to do during the cold winters for the farmers and everybody else, so they all went curling, said Richardson.

curling population has slipped. We don have the number of curlers we used to have. I disappointed in that. But I didn even start curling until I was 21.

didn take it up until we did because we had nothing else to do in the winter either. I was just a rough labour guy then. We just decided to put a curling team together for something to do. That how we started. figures it could finally happen this year with Laycock having put together a team with 22 year old Manitoba import Matt Dunstone throwing fourth rocks.

team we have now, if they play like John Shuster did at the Olympics and get hot at the end like Shuster did and catch the other teams just a shade off their games they have a chance to win the Brier.

be cheering for them. said this would be the year to do it.

was a lot of fun to come here and see all those guys wearing their old uniforms and being part of the ceremonies. Boy, there were a lot of familiar faces. Every time you looked at one of them you kind of remembered their story from their Brier that year, too. With Sandra Schmirler team and her daughter throwing the first rock it was a pretty cool ceremony in general. They did a really good job.

look around at all those guys from all those Briers and you see a lot of really great curlers. It amazing that since 1980 no one broke through and won this thing. There were certainly a lot of people out there in those ceremonies who were capable of it. his team of import third Dunstone from Manitoba and the frontend brother combination of Kirk and Dallan Muyres, Laycock figures there potential to do here what American Shuster did at the Olympics.

definitely do. You look across the field here with all the top teams and there nobody here we haven beaten. As long as we keep ourselves in striking distance at the end of the week, I don now why we couldn have that kind of outcome. losing 5 2 to Quebec for openers Saturday,
timberland shoe laces Ernie Richardson cheering for Steven Laycock and Saskatchewan at the Brier
Saskatchewan came within a heroic sweeping job by Reid Carruthers front end from scoring three in the 10th end and ended up losing to Manitoba in the extra end in Sunday morning draw.

doesn matter when the losses happen. I didn think we were going to go through this pool with less than two losses, said the skip.

CURLING IS HEADING TO VEGAS

REGINA When Ernie Richardson ruled the curling world they played 12 end games, they played for prizes like cars, fridges, watches and an assortment of donated bonspiel prizes.

They played with corn brooms, wore wool sweaters and good shots were often more good luck than good sweeping.

He won the first world curling championship, then called the Scotch Cup played in Scotland involving two teams Canada and Scotland. Ernie is looking forward, all these years after the first one in 1959 to going to the world championships this year. In Las Vegas!

going there with my whole family, eight Richardsons, said the old skip who winters in Arizona.

that something. A world curling championship in Las Vegas, Nevada. And I think you really going to see a boom in curling because of John Shuster winning the Olympics and the mixed doubles. I still like four man curling better but I liked that too. If it something that is going to promote curling, I for it. brings us to this 16 team, two pool, Nunavut included Brier we dealing with this year.

teams? That seems like a lot. The Nunavut boys will have a thrill coming here but they won win a game, of course. I lave nothing against them. They curlers. I love all curlers. They have to be good people or they wouldn be curling. But I don know about them being in the Brier. And I don know about this Team Wild Card idea. I definitely don think we should have a wild card.

Back with the Ottawa Senators after spending last weekend playing pirate games with good friend Victor Hedman, captain Erik Karlsson says his focus is on righting the ship.

been overthinking things for a long time now, Karlsson said before Tuesday game against the Carolina Hurricanes. do have a good group of guys in here, good individual players in here, and we know we can be a good team. We do have to relax a little bit and just play the game of hockey that we know we can instead of (trying) to do the right thing all the time. with the Senators (15 23 9) entering Tuesday game a distant 17 points out of a playoff spot in the National Hockey League Eastern Conference, Karlsson says the goal is to try and bring some fun back to the dressing room in the latter stages of what has been a dismal season.

In case you somehow missed it, Karlsson was in his glory in Tampa, embracing the pirate themed Gasparilla Festival with Hedman, the star Lightning defencemen who grew up playing with the Senators captain in Sweden.

Karlsson dressed in pirate wear and opined that,

The Senators captain, who could become an unrestricted free agent following the 2018 19 season negotiations on a new deal can begin on July 1 said he understood why there was so much speculation about his future during All Star Game weekend. At the same time, he insisted nothing had changed from what he said earlier in the month.
